Donald Trump has so many incoming invectives that he might install an anti-missile system to protect himself! Nine days after Hurricane Maria destroyed much of Puerto Rico, little help had materialized. No food, no water, no electricity for almost 3.4 million US citizens. Setting aside any remnant of pride, Carmen Yulin Cruz, the mayor of San Juan, the island’s largest city, begged Trump and his administration to do something to help her people. She pleaded that the conditions were dire and people are facing death for lack of basics—water, food, housing, medical attention and supplies.
President Trump and his Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke formed a mutual admiration society in which each was painting a rosy picture of how effective FEMA was on the same day Cruz was pleading for help on TV news. Duke, more concerned about pleasing one fragile ego than saving millions must have graduated from Trump’s alma mater, “SPL”, The School for Pathological Liars.
Let’s be frank. A President who does nothing to save his own citizens is committing genocide. Like Emperor Nero, Trump tweets while Puerto Rico drowns. Until now, the press has (correctly) reported on Trump’s multitude of illegalities including Russian involvement in his businesses and the election, on his flagrantly ignoring the Constitution’s emolument’s clause (illegally accepting money from foreign governments through his hotels, resorts, etc.), on his obsessive lying, his bullying behavior, his pure ignorance, poor judgment, lack of diplomacy, disrespect for everyone except Vladimir Putin and lack of compassion. But his back-burner approach to this massive human tragedy affecting his own citizens is beyond the pale. He was more interested in tweeting his outrage about NFL players kneeling in protest during the playing of the national anthem than mobilizing forces that could save millions. This is dereliction of duty by any standard. He is the President whose responsibility to protect the citizenry. This is impeachable.
*Chutzpah is a Yiddish word, now fully assimilated into most world languages much like bagels have been into global diets. One classic definition involves a man who, after murdering both parents, has the “chutzpah” to beg the court for leniency on the grounds that he is now an orphan. Synonyms include: arrogance, impudence, gall, audacity, effrontery, nerve, cheek, brazen fearlessness, impudence and much more.
